Abstract

Consumption is an economic activity closely linked to resource use, production, distribution, and waste generation. An increase in consumption that is not balanced by efficiency can exert pressure on natural resources and the environment. Consequently, sustainable consumption has become a crucial element in efforts to build an economy that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This article examines strategies for efficiency in sustainable economic consumption, focusing on resource efficiency, shifts in consumer behavior, the use of digital technology, product innovation, the circular economy, and policy support. The discussion draws upon a literature review, utilizing two primary studies on the blue economy and sustainable consumption, alongside various supporting references from international research and organizations. The findings indicate that consumption efficiency is not merely about reducing the quantity of goods consumed, but rather about how consumers can derive greater value while utilizing fewer resources. The availability of information, convenience, a diverse range of product choices, and offerings tailored to specific needs can facilitate sustainable consumption decisions. Furthermore, technological innovation, waste management, product reuse, and the application of circular economy principles can enhance efficiency across the entire value chain. Ultimately, achieving sustainable consumption requires the integrated involvement of consumers, businesses, the government, and various other stakeholders.
